A Room to Heal Contact: Linda Salomons at lsalomons@stny.rr.com 607-729-3831 A Room to Heal creates a healing environment in the homes of children affected by serious medical conditions, whose families lack the resources to create this kind of environment. Volunteers participate in the "make-over" of the child's bedroom, which includes painting and shopping, as well as office duties such as fundraising, soliciting donations from local businesses, mailings, and any other tasks needed for the project. ACCORD Contact: Kacey Ellsworth at 607-724-5153 accordny.com ACCORD, A Center for Dispute Resolution, Inc. was founded in 1982 and is dedicated to assisting individuals and families with peaceful resolution to conflict. The agency accomplishes its mission through a variety of programs such as mediation and conciliation services. This service is an effective alternative to the courts because it provides a more informal and less adversarial environment for the peaceful resolution of disputes. Parties are free to create any agreement that meets the needs of all involved. Community volunteers who have received training under the New York State Office of Court Administration guidelines act as neutral facilitators of the mediation sessions. Mediation sessions are held at the convenience of, and at no cost to, the parties involved. Each year ACCORD handles approximately 1,400 family court, small claims and community cases. ACCORD uses interns and volunteers to support its programs through both direct service to clients after appropriate training, as well as through administrative support. Action for Older Persons Contact: Shelli Cordisco at 607-722-1251 Volunteers provide advocacy, education and assistance on a range of age-related topics. Volunteer-based programs include the Long Term Care Ombudsman Program, the Health Insurance Counseling Program, the Advance Planning for End-of-Life, and the Real Choices CARE Program. Computer skills tutoring is also provided by volunteers. Training increases volunteers' awareness and sensitivity regarding the challenges faced by older adults, as well as teaches volunteers how to advocate effectively for the needs of those who cannot speak for themselves. Alzheimer's Association, Southern Tier Chapter Contact: Jane Hudreck at 607-785-7852 AA's mission is to provide support and assistance to persons afflicted by Alzheimer's Disease and to their care-giving families and to support research and advocacy for the cure, treatment and prevention of Alzheimer's disease and related disorders. Volunteers are the backbone of our organization. They help with office work, telephone counseling, in the lending library, at special events, with public relations and public speaking, education, and support group facilitation. Volunteers develop a knowledge of dementia, listening skills, and presentation skills, while also learning about community resources. Required Training/Applications: Two to twenty hours of training. Animal Care Council Contact: Barb DeFeo at 607-648-3490 (To turn in strays: 607-786-5740 ) Volunteers needed to care for cats waiting for adoption at the shelter. This involves feedings, cleaning litter boxes, changing bedding, laundry, playing with cats, and other cat-care requirements. Assistance with fundraising projects like the annual ACC garage sale, is needed and short-term projects, such as painting the shelter, are also available. Required Training/Applications: No training required of general volunteers. Those wishing to assist with medications must work with a regular medications volunteer for a minimum of 20 hours. Animal care interns work with the keepers in the daily care of the animals and their exhibits. An independent, 501 (c) 3 public service organization, the BCAC promotes a thriving arts community, essential to the quality of life in Broome County. We strive to advance the awareness and value of the arts through advocacy, fundraising, grant making, services and programs. The BCAC administers the annual United Cultural Fund Campaign and awards United Cultural Fund grants to arts organizations, community groups and individual artists. Broome County Environmental Management Council Contact: Stacy Merola at 607-778-2116 or email smerola@co.broome.ny.us The Broome County Environmental Management Council (EMC) has advised County and local government on environmental matters since 1971. The local citizen environmental advisory board gathers and discusses environmental information; writes plans, reports, and advisory resolutions; and makes policy recommendations to County government on matters including solid and hazardous waste management, natural resource conservation and protection, and land use planning, among others. The EMC and its committees generally meet monthly during the year; meetings are always open to the public. Citizen volunteers can apply for EMC membership to become either voting or non-voting Council members; applications are accepted year round. Nominees for EMC voting memberships are appointed by the County Executive and confirmed by the County Legislature. The Council also helps identify and draw attention to environmental concerns through public participation and education programs. EMC members and citizen volunteers participate in a variety of local environmental education events including Earth Fest, Broome County Book Recycling Fairs, and Broome County Riverbank Clean Ups. Adult Day Care Activity Volunteers work with clients and assist with recreational projects, exercise, trivia games, poetry readings and other programs to stimulate memory, conversation and self-esteem. Special Projects Interns work on activities such as evaluation research, program development, direct service for various areas of the OFA. The office is looking for volunteers for local senior centers and Meals on Wheels locations. Broome County Urban League Contact: Jennifer Lesko at 607- 723-7303 or email jlesko@bculorg Fax: (607) 723-5827 The Broome County Urban League has over thirty five years of experience in working with minorities and those in poverty to secure economic self-reliance, parity and power and civil rights through a host of diverse services specific to individual need. The agency is able to carry out its mission and meet the needs of its constituents by providing a variety of services to community members, ranging from programs designed for school-aged children to senior citizens. Volunteers would be able to work closely with staff and clients in whatever program they choose. They could work one on one with clients through the Center for Help, Technology Center or the Satellite Tutorial Program. Any interests that they may have we will do our best to accommodate them to ensure that they have a fulfilling experience. Volunteers assist youth specialists in classrooms between the hours of 3:00-5:30pm, focusing on academic assistance, character development, and physical recreation (grades K-5). Also serve as tutors and mentors (grades 6-12) and teach or assist with adult computer classes. Required Training/Applications: An application must be submitted with at least two references. Children's Home of Wyoming Conference Contact: Joy Moore at 607-772-6904 (ext. 186) The Children's Home provides a variety of services to mildly and moderately disturbed youth from ages 5-21. Services include: residential treatment, private special education, day treatment services, clinical services, therapeutic recreation, vocational education services, emergency foster care, non-secure detention, and after-care services. Sororities and fraternities may lead a special activity. Volunteers can help children with reading difficulties, read stories in the dormitories, teach a special skill or music lesson, etc, all while learning to work with emotionally disturbed children. Upon successful completion of required training, an exit interview, and a short probationary period, participants will be a NYS certified Rape Crisis Counselor and may volunteer in one or more of these three major areas. First, on the 24-hour crisis line, which provides crisis intervention to clients over the phone from your own home. Second, completion of an additional 3-hour class and two successful shadows with an advocate allow you to provide victim advocacy at local hospitals and police stations. Third, in preventative education workshops offered at local elementary schools. GEAR UP is an acronym that stands for Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs. We work most closely with city school students from low-income families, students who will be the first in their family to go to college, and students who speak English as a second language. BU students participate in GEAR UP as mentors or tutors. Tutors help with academic studies. Mentors form a one-one relationship with a student in order to facilitate the student’s educational, social, and personal growth. Tutors are required to work with students for only one semester. Mentors are asked to commit to 2 semesters if possible. BU students also have a choice of being a volunteer or an intern. Volunteers are required to spend a minimum of 1 hour/week at the schools. Interns must provide 50 hours over the semester (5 hours/week) and attend a one hour seminar that meets weekly; interns receive 2 credits for their participation. In addition to providing school-based academic services, BU students also have the opportunity to chaperone the school students on trips to visit colleges in NYS, to attend athletic and cultural events on college campuses, to go bowling or ice skating, or to participate in similar activities with the school students. GEAR UP also has an after-school program twice/week which provides tutoring, homework help, an enrichment activity, and a warm meal before the students are bused home. This is from 3-5pm. We serve fifth to eighth graders, and have many kids who are tough for their age, live in poverty in an urban setting, and have had many hurts and losses in life. Volunteer opportunities at the Advocacy Office include assembling legal information regarding issues for victims of domestic violence, assisting advocates in family court, tracking legislation and writing legislators, and reception and clerical work. Volunteer opportunities at the Shelter include sharing talents such as nutrition, home safety, or hair and fashion, facilitating house meetings or providing programs for children during house meetings, staffing the crisis hotline, and transporting clients to appointments.
